FTSP UII Architect Professional Study Program Participates in the Development of Kotabaru Lampion Village

In an effort to realize a livable, affordable, and sustainable residential area for low-income communities in Yogyakarta City, the Yogyakarta City Government through the Yogyakarta City Public Works, Housing and Settlement Areas Agency (DPUPKP) has initiated slum area management activities in RT 18 RW 04, Kotabaru Village. The activity was implemented with the concept of MAHANANNI (Livable Housing and Settlement) arrangement through a land consolidation scheme, funded by the Yogyakarta City Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget for Fiscal Year 2025.

The program aims to reduce the area of slum areas while completing the slum scoring value to zero, and is part of the Prevention and Quality Improvement Activities for Slum Settlements in the City of Yogyakarta.

The Professional Architecture Study Program (PPAr), Department of Architecture, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP), Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) is once again actively participating in the design and planning process related to the settlement arrangement of the Code Valley slum area, Kotabaru. Through the Advocacy Design course, PPAr UII designed the area and 33 housing units. Under this program, 10 unsuitable houses will be rebuilt to be suitable, and all will be connected to the Code Valley road.

UII's Vice Rector for Networking and Entrepreneurship, Ir. Wiryono Raharjo, M.Arch., Ph.D., stated on the occasion that the program was a collaboration between the Yogyakarta City DPUPKP and the Islamic University of Indonesia. "This activity is a joint learning laboratory, which is also run in Nairobi, Kenya. In the future, it will serve as a model for implementing similar programs in other countries, which will soon be implemented in Brazil," he said.

The Head of the Architectural Professional Study Program of the FTSP UII, Dr. Ar. Yulianto P. Prihatmaji, ST, MT, IPM, IAI, added that the results of the Advocacy Design (Addes) PPAr UII lecture in collaboration with the Yogyakarta City Slum Prevention and Quality Improvement Program (PPKPK) were downstreamed into the Housing Improvement Program (Hi-Move) movement. UII invited national and international networks by collaborating with The Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centers (SPARC) India which allocates funds for the development of slum areas outside India, and the Indonesian Alternative Communication Education Assessment Strategy (SPEAK).

Meanwhile, the inauguration ceremony was held on 7 Muharram 1447 H / 3 July 2025 by the Mayor of Yogyakarta, Dr. (HC) dr. H. Hasto Wardoyo, Sp.OG (K)., who in his speech stated that Kotabaru should be the veranda of Malioboro, and in the future could become a new destination for tourism. He also emphasized that Kotabaru and the surrounding riverbanks must be clean.

Present on the occasion were the Dean of FTSP UII, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ar. Ilya F. Maharika, MA., IAI., along with members of the UII Hi-Move (Housing Improvement Program) team accompanied by other PPAr UII lecturers.
