Synergy between FTSP UII and BRIN: Encouraging Ecological Science Integration Through Ecohydrology Workshops
The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP) of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), UNESCO, and the Indonesian Limnological Society (MLI), held a Workshop on Improving the Integration of Ecological Knowledge (LEK) in Ecohydrology-based Water Resources Management on Monday, July 28, 2025/3 Safar 2025 at the Ballroom of The Alana Hotel Malioboro, Yogyakarta.
The event was officially opened by Dr. Luki Subehi as Chairman of the Indonesian Limnology Society and Head of the Limnology and Water Resources Research Center accompanied by Budi Heru Santosa as Chairman of the UNESCO IHP with a gong striking ceremony.
In his remarks, Dr. Luki Subehi conveyed the importance of cross-sector collaboration in sustainable water resource management rooted in local wisdom and a scientific approach.
Universitas Islam Indonesia as a partner institution also provided its support through the remarks of the UII Rector represented by the Dean of FTSP UII, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ar. Ilya Fadjar Maharika, MA, IAI. In his remarks, Prof. Ilya emphasized the need for a transdisciplinary approach that integrates engineering, ecology, and socio-cultural sciences in formulating sustainable environmental management strategies. "In line with this, FTSP UII will hold The International Conference in Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE) with the theme Vernacularizing Sustainability: Stories of Ideas, Spaces and Technologies as a forum for exchanging ideas related to sustainable environmental management," he concluded. Furthermore, Prof. Ilya said that the 8th ICSBE was packaged differently from usual, namely in the form of a webinar series with the output of a Book Chapter published internationally. The workshop organized with BRIN also served as the opening of the 8th ICSBE Webinar event series which will be held on November 1, 2025 and December 6, 2025.
Before the workshop began, UII students from the Xaviera Dance Student Activity Unit (UKM) demonstrated their skills by performing a dance called the Gudeg Dance. This dance introduces culinary culture, specifically Yogyakarta's traditional food, with its distinctive method of "diudeg-udeg," or constant stirring, which gives it its name.
The three-day workshop, held from July 28-30, 2025, brought together researchers, academics, practitioners, and policymakers from various agencies. The goal was to formulate an integrative approach to ecohydrology-based natural resource management, strengthening the role of Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) as a basis for policy and concrete actions. At the conclusion of the workshop, field trip to Embung Nglanggeran, one of the water conservation locations in the Gunung Kidul area of Yogyakarta.
This activity is an important momentum in encouraging policy transformation based on science and local wisdom, for the sake of environmental sustainability and community welfare.
