Architect Talk Series #23: Reframing the Future of Sustainable Habitats

Yogyakarta, April 20, 2026 – The Professional Architect Program (PPAr) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP) of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) successfully held Architect Talk Series #23. This annual event is designed as an inspiring public lecture for new students, while also marking the opening of the new academic year of PPAr UII with the progressive theme “Reframing Future Habitat: Architecture, Locality, Sustainability”.
Architect Talk has become a regular tradition for PPAr UII, featuring renowned Indonesian practicing architects. This 23rd edition features Gregorius Supie Yolodi, Principal Architect of D-Associates, as the keynote speaker. The in-depth dialogue will discuss global architecture impacted by technological acceleration, climate change, massive urbanization, and the complex ecological crisis.

The resource person discusses the concept future habitat This goes beyond sophisticated, technology-based buildings. Furthermore, the forum highlighted the integration of human life systems with the natural, social, cultural, and digital environments. "We're not just building structures, but creating meaningful, sustainable ecosystems," he emphasized.
The main challenge raised is the marginalization of local contexts due to universal and homogenous design approaches. Indonesia's tropical climate, local wisdom, local materials, and ecological landscapes are often overlooked, causing built spaces to lose their identity and resilience. Architect Talk #23 presents a discourse space for formulating contextual solutions that combine technological innovation with local values.

This interactive public lecture format was attended by approximately 40 PPAr students, Master of Architecture students, and 130 6th semester Bachelor of Architecture students in the Architecture Design Studio 2 course. The committee emphasized the importance of this event for shaping the mindset of future architecture students. "Architect Talk is not just a lecture, but a call for Indonesian architects to contribute to a sustainable habitat that is deeply rooted in local identity."
The theme "Reframing Future Habitat" is relevant to the urgency of Indonesian architecture as it confronts the global-local duality. How can sustainability principles be integrated with Indonesian wisdom? This question will be answered through the practical perspective of Gregorius Supie Yolodi, known for his innovative projects.

FTSP UII demonstrates a strong commitment to the development of sustainable architecture through Architect Talk Series #23, reflected in the PPAr UII curriculum, the Yogyakarta riverbank village development project with international partners, and the consistent Sustainability in Architecture seminar. FTSP UII not only produces internationally recognized architects but also pioneers in the use of AI and environmentally friendly community-based design.
